Microchip Fabrication & Reaction Rates

This lesson introduces students to the processes involved in manufacturing microchips and fabricating ME components focusing on the chemistry connections within these processes. Students will use what they know about reaction rate and apply chemistry concepts to the process of microchip production. This activity is designed to serve as a review of reaction rate and rate laws not an introduction. After students learn about the microchip manufacturing process, they will determine the overall reaction rate and the rate laws of reactions which occur across different steps of the fabrication process.

  • Core Content: Chemistry

  • Grade Levels: 10-12

  • Time Required: Two 50-minute class periods

  • ME Career Connection: Students will see the fabrication and semiconductor manufacturing process and take a video tour of one company that manufactures and fabricates wafers and chips.
